Youth deny the Lie Protect street women, punish clients: Vatican

Young people protested outside Alan Carpenter's offices this week as Parliament prepares to legalise the creation and killing of embryonic humans on behalf of investors - and a shrinking number of researchers ,

Up to 300 youth descended on St George's Terrace on short notice at peak hour last Monday to defend their unborn brothers and sisters as the cloning debate reaches fever pitch. At 4pm when the suits were drifting around Perth's CBD, wave after wave of youth from high school students to young adults in their late 20s protested outside Premier Alan Carpenter's office on the corner of St George's Terrace and Mill Street. They carried banners decrying human cloning and the destruction of human embryos for research purposes, while advocating the use of adult stem cells. Hundreds of youth were marshalled onto St George's Terrace at short notice after a meeting to organise it was only held the week prior. Chris Laundy, 18, one of three protest organisers, said the show of force made a statement that youth are passionate about the world they will inherit. "If they won't listen to a couple of hundred young people, they won't listen to anything. If they're that stubborn, nothing will work," said Mr Laundy, who personally educated passers-by on the injustices of the Human Reproductive Technology Amendment Bill 2007 and how ordinary people can fight for the future. Mr Laundy then proceeded with co-organisers Joanna Lawson, 26 and Clayton Walsh, 23, who at 13 was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, into the Premier's office to hand Mr Carpenter the petition, on which they gained 200-odd signatures on the day. Cathedral's front door swings in el By Sylvia Defendi

Work on St Mary's Cathedral's grand processional entrance began on June 19 with the spectacular relocation of the preserved front facade of the southern porch, with the assistance of a large crane. Once secured, the seven metre high and four metre wide façade was carried into place at the western front, where it will become the main entry point for the restored and completed Cathedral building. The southern porch façade forms part of the 1865 Cathedral, which was slightly modified by Bishop Matthew Gibney. Original plans for the completed Cathedral had proposed a new processional entry, but that was scrapped Continued - Page 9 Photo timeline - Page 9

A report doing the rounds on the Internet claims to present pictures of a miracle at Guadalupe. French Catholic doctors think it is remarkable, but a priest urges caution.

On the hunt: Men patrol Hamburg's red light district in this file photo. As WA prepares to legalise the purchase and sale of women and girls the Vatican has recommended the Swedish model of addressing prostitution. PHoTo- CNS

Nations should protect women from the violence and "modern slavery" of prostitution and punish the men who are their clients, the Vatican says in a document on pastoral care for "street women" released yesterday. CNS reports that the new document says the exploitation of women stemmed from activities including human trafficking and sex tourism and the problem should be tackled in a comprehensive way. "The victims of prostitution are human beings, who in many cases cry out for help, to be freed from slavery," the document by the Vatican's department on migrant issues said. "The customers too are people with deeply rooted problems, and in a certain sense are also slaves," the document said. "An effective measure towards cultural change with respect to prostitution could derive from associating criminal law with social condemnation." Asked to explain the passage, Monsignor Agostino Marchetto, Continued - Page 3
