Bishop pleads for 11-year-old refugee from Indonesia who came here fleeing bloody religious violence
• By The Record • By BRIAN DAVIES of The C a thole( Weekly Sydney. Additional reporting: Record National Affairs editor PAUL GRAY.
The Catholic Church's spokesman on refugees has confirmed that he has issued instructions for a written request to Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews to allow 11-year -old schoolboy George Radjapono to remain in Australia. The Refugee Review Tribunal recently refused to grant the boy a protection visa despite the fact that English is now his first language and he has completed most of his schooling in this country. But Bishop Joseph Grech of Flendigo, Victoria, who is the chairman of the Australian bishops' Committee for Migrants and Refugees, says the Church will now officially ask for the boy to be allowed to stay. "Our feeling is that this boy has been in Australia so long, and we would love him to stay: Bishop Grech told The Record this week. "As a Church. we would like to encourage the Government to allow the boy to stay." Bishop Grech said the Church had closely monitored the appeal by George Radjapono and his mother for a protection visa, for years. Asked if the case had anything to say about the Government's refugee policy overall, Bishop Grech replied: "The Government can't say, 'everyone comes in, who wants to,' of course. We accept that. "However there are certain cases where discretion must be used. This is one of those cases," the bishop argued. He added: "From what I know, there are no security problems with this boy. We know this because he's been here so long." The Australian Catholic Church's spokesman on refugees will ask Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews to overturn a Refugee Review Tribunal decision to refuse a protection visa for an 11-year-old schoolboy. The Refugee Review Tribunal's decision has dashed the boy's hopes of remaining in Australia where he
