Limbo fades

'Good reasons to hope' for unbaptised babies says Vatican Theological commission says Limbo concept reflects 'a restrictive view of salvation' - it was never a doctrine, only a theory

Youth get the spirit of WYD 2008

• By John Thavis

VATICAN CITY (CNS) - After several years of study, the Vatican's International Theological Commission said there are good reasons to hope that babies who die without being baptised go to heaven. In a document published on April 20, the commission said the traditional concept of limbo - as a place where unbaptised infants spend eternity but without communion with God - seemed to reflect an "unduly restrictive view of Scott Hahn salvation." The Church continues to teach that, because of original sin, baptism is the ordinary way of salvation for all people and urges parents to baptise infants, the document said. But there is greater theological awareness today that God is merciful and "wants all human beings to be saved," it said. Grace has priority over sin, and the exclusion of innocent babies from heaven does not seem to reflect Christ's special love for "the little ones," it said. "Our conclusion is that the many factors that we have considered ... give serious theological and liturgical grounds for hope that unbaptised infants who die will be saved and enjoy the beatific vision," the document said. "We emphasise that these are reasons for prayerful hope, rather than grounds for sure knowledge," it added. The 41-page document, titled "The Hope Continued on page 2

Pennsylvania funds answer to abortion As Treasurer Eric Ripper and Premier Alan Carpenter try to decide what to do with a bloated budget surplus, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the USA has come up with a Government-funded service dedicated to supporting real alternatives to abortion for women in difficulty. Pennsylvania, with a population of about 14million, provides an annual .$5.5 million budget to support women with problem pregnancies from conception until their babies are 12 months old. The Pennsylvania program - known unambiguously as the Pennsylvania Alternative to Abortions Services Program - has become a model for other States in the US and could also be a model for Australian States in order to put real meaning into the claim made by all our parliaments that they are not pro-abortion, but pro-choice. It puts real community support behind women who want to exercise the choice for life instead of death. The program contracts 120 service providers made up of pregnancy support centres, social service agencies like Catholic Charities, adoption agencies and maternity homes throughout Pennsylvania to reach out to women in unplanned or crisis pregnancies. An interview with the director of the Alternative to Abortions program available on Vista 1 in this edition.
