As the Archdiocese launches its fundraising appeal, Archbishop Hickey hopes the completed cathedral will become a centre for prayer to spread the Gospel in a secular age. On the eve of the formal launch of the $10 million appeal to complete the funding for the conservation and completion of St Mary's Cathedral, Archbishop Barry Hickey said he hoped the building would be completed debt-free by the end of 2008. The total cost of the project is now $25million, of which the Archdiocese has already raised $15million, including $3mi11ion
from the Federal Government and $2million from the State Government. Archbishop Hickey said he clearly remembered making the historic decision. "I felt confident it was the right time. The excellent state of preservation of Bishop Martin Griver's coffin (interred in 1886) under St Mary's Cathedral was remarkable in comparison to that of Bishop Matthew Gibney's (interred in 1925).
