The 1985 extraordinary synod of bishops ended with an endorsement of the Second Vatican Council's openness to the modern world and its call for inner-church spiritual renewal. The Council did not want an isolated church, Pope John Paul II said in a synod speech on the final working day.

Bishops' conferences have proven to be useful church organisations, the pope said. He also approved publication of two synod documents: A pastoral "Message to the People of God" and a final document summarising the thoughts and recommendations of the 162 delegates who attended the synod. The synod was called by the pope to analyse the teachings of Vatican II, which lasted from 1962 to 1965.
