Archbishop warns meeting
Earlier discussions had been addressed by Father Pat Bishop S3 and Bishop Brian Kyrne on Eucharist and Archbishops Foley and Carnley on Authority. The 270 present at St. Denis' on Monday night, the largest attendance, heard the Catholic and Anglican archbishops give short introductions on ministry, the third ARCIC topic, and the major part of the 90 minute session was Oven over to replies to questions. Archbishop Goody explained the Australian bishops have already advised Rome they consider the
understanding of ministry. He explained that such agreement on the nature of ministry is an essential prerequisite before the two churches can move to mutual recognition of each other's orders. In response to questions relating to Pope Leo's X11I's historic statement on the invalidity of Anglican orders, Archbishop Goody supported calls for a re-examination of the reasons behind Pope Leo's decisions, especially in the light of developments in sacramental theology this century. He pointed out the 1896
Apostolicae document Curae had never been regarded as infallible though it did have great authority. In any case. Archbishop Goody continued, he felt sure that the Holy Spirit was able to overcome such difficulties even if the decision was not formally rescinded. On the controversial question of ordained women, Archbishop Carnley outlined the "official but informal" dialogue which has already occurred between the Catholic and Anglican churches. LONDON: A conference of members of the Anglican and Old Catholic Church, held at Chichester Theological College, England, discussed the question of primacy and authority in the Church. The 25 members of the conference came from various parts of the Anglican commmunion and f rom Old Catholic Churches in Holland, Switzerland, Germany and Austria, the Polish
National Church in the US and Canada, and the Polish Catholic Church in Poland. The meeting was chaired by Archbishop Marinus Kok, Archbishop Emeritus of Utrecht, and the Bishop of Chichester, Bishop Eric Kemp. The conference issued a final statement on Authority and Primacy in the Church. The co-signatories recognise the growth of a
sort of primacy within their own churches, and the special importance of the See of Rome but say firmly, "neither of our churches could accept the papal primacy as it is at present interpreted and excercised by the Roman See." The conference had no time to discuss infallibility as the Vienna conference of 1982 had suggested.

He stressed, however, the Catholic church in the hard decisions she makes in these various areas is not inspired by an exclusive elitism but by a commitment to doing God's will.
