Tops WA RISES The 1985 Project Compassion Appeal raised a total of $2,874,423. This is almost 20 per cent higher than last year's figure. The appeal, which is a major fundraising campaign of Australian Catholic Relief, is held in every diocese in Australia during Lent. The money raised goes to support relief and development activities in the Third World and education program on development, justice and peace in Australia. Almost every diocese showed a substantial increase over the previous year, with Toowoomba leading the way. Catholics in Queensland's only inland diocese donated

Other dioceses to show major increases were Rockhampton (43 per cent), Adelaide (40 per cent), Bunbury (33 per cent), Hobart (30 per cent) and Wollongong (27 per cent). ACR's national director, Michael Whiteley, said he was delighted with the results of the appeal. "Australian Catholics have obviously been deeply moved by the plight of the poor in Africa," he said.
