A new church open
Archbishop at Girrawheen dedication A capacity congregation of more than 1000 braved wet, windy and cold weather to attend the blessing of Our Lady of Mercy church, Girrawheen last Sunday. Archbishop Foley celebrated the opening Mass and dedication of the church, built at a total cost of $530,000.
The uniquely designed church f eatures an octagonal shape, designed by church architect Iris Rossen. There is a high peaked roofline at each extremity of the octagon shape, containing a stained glass window. Opening of the church was a dream realised for parish priest, Father Tom Gaine, and the efforts of the Girrawheen parishioners.
Archbishop Foley during the opening Mass and dedication was assisted by Father Don Sproxton and Mons McCrann.

MESSAGE FOR JUST PEACE...
The whole Church in Australia has the opportunity to discuss and reflect on Christ's calling for his people to be peacemakers. Archbishop Foley said the Word for a Just Peace paper released by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace and prepared for this week's Social Justice Sunday offered this opportunity. Archbishop Foley said the paper was not an official statement of the Catholic Church. But it had been approved by the Australian Bishop's Conference for discussion and reflection. an absence of war, nor security merely in the building of armaments, he said. "Peace must not be conceived as the absence of war. hut as a totality composed of inseparable values; the freedom of the human person and respect for his dignity; justice and solidarity; mercy and love of neighbour; the courage of truth and hope." ( Pope John Paul II). In examining the difficult issue of peace, a wealth of direction was provided by the scriptures, by the history of the Church's response and by Papal statements. Work for a Just Peace set out a most useful resource for Christians in outlining and drawing from these teachings.
As members of society. Catholics must accept the responsibility to work for peace which necessitates a discussion of practical and political initiatives taken to implement it, Archbishop Foley said. A beginning of this discussion may be found in the paper prepared by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace. Inevitably there would be disagreement even among Catholics over these practical steps but an attempt must be made.
"If we do not seek to be part of the solution. we remain part of the problem." he said. Since Christians were called to do iustice, the way would be found for Catholics to be among the peacemakers of our world. This conviction was tit grounded on a belief the building of new structures alone would steer our society on the path of peace. Rather it sprung from the knowledge "moral conversion", that inner change, was possible for all people through life in Christ. In Work for a Just Peace. the CCJP declared this moral conversion was "a commitment to become a creative person, active in building peace".
