Catholic youth organisations today (Sunday) will be taking part in one of the biggest doorknock appeals mounted by Churches in WA. The task of preparing, dividing and allocating kits to respective collectors has been one of the biggest organisational undertakings for the full time workers and leaders in the Catholic youth groups. Leaders have found young people did riot readily respond to pleas and invitations.

!Schools orm honour guard Geralctton's St Francis Xavier cathedral was packed to capacity for the funeral on Thursday of Bishop Thomas, a former Bishop of Geraldton. Principal celebrant for the Requiem was one of Bishop Thomas' successors to the Geraldton chair, Bishop Hickey, attended by Father Basil Thomas PP of Yarrawonga (Vic), a brother of Bishop Thomas, and Monsignor John Barden, VG Geraldton. Also attending were Archbishop Rush of Brisbane, Archbishop Foley, of Perth and another successor of Bishop Thomas at Geraldton, Archbishop Goody, and Bishops Healy, Jobst and Brennan, of Wagga Wagga NSW.

Another 50 concelebrants made up of priests from Geraldton, New Norcia, Bunbury and Perth took part along with four priests from Bishop Thomas' old diocese of Bendigo, Victoria, including Monsignor Brian Long representing Bishop Daly. Prayers at the graveside were recited by Bishop Thomas' brother, Father Basil Thomas, concluding with Salve Regina, sung by all present. Guards of honour were provided by students from Stella Mans College, St Patrick's College, and the St John's, St Lawrence's and St P .; Francis Xavier schools. Australia's Catholic bishops have made scathing attacks on the latest IVF-associated Human Embryo Experimentation Bill, now before the Federal Senate. The seven archbishops said in a special statement received yesterday the Bill raised legal and moral problems of the "most crucial nature". They were most critical of the Bill's provisions for experimentation on human embryos for unspecified scientific advances. Experiments would possibly have significant "financial advantage to the researchers", the statement said.
