ROME: Ali Agca, the attacker of Pope John Paul ir May 1981, says he would have shot the pope in Turke in 1979 if he had had the opportunity. Agca told why he wrote a letter to a Turkish newspape threatening the pope in 1979. At the time, Agca was in hidim after escaping from a Turkish prison, where he had been hel( for the murder of a journalist. Agca previously told Italian investigators he wrote the threatening letter to create a diversion and make it easier for him to escape from Turkey. But in the Rome courtroom, he said he really considered shooting the pope at that t ime. "If I had had the chance, I'd have done it at that time, because I had a great dislike for Western imperialists," Agca said. Agca has told investigators that he was approached in 1980 by Turks who, acting on behalf of Bulgarian secret services, hired him to shoot the pope.

I was trained, along with a group of friends, by Bulgarian and Czechoslovakian experts," Agca said. He said terrorists from Italy, France, spain and West Germany also attended the training camp. "Iaffirm with certainty that the political and financial centre of international terrorism is the Soviet Union." Agca said, his voice rising. Agca began contacts with terrorist groups after dropping out of a university in Ankara.
He worked with a group of friends associated with the extremist Gray Wolves organisation. eventually planning terrorist attacks himself. Their targets, he said, included "parties and organisations of the left." The group carried out a bombing of Turkey's constitutional court. Among the planners of that attack was his "right-hand man and friend" Oral Celik Celik. who is at large, is being tried in absentia by the court on charges of helping carry out the papal shooting. Agca said the group financed its activities by extortion, robberies of hanks and post offices and by acting as couriers in smuggling operations. He said he had made several trips to Bulgaria in connection with an arms and drug-smuggling Operation, The operation. he said. was "completely controlled by the Bulgarian State."
