Despite weekend press speculation to the contrary, Pope John Paul's November visit to Australia will be only a week and visits to most capitals including Perth will be of less than 24 hours. The papal representative in Australia, Archbishop Barbarito said in Canberra this week the Australian sector of the journey will be about a week. It is expected the pope will make a three day visit to New Zealand. Although stories of the pope's visit have been circulating for some time, the official announcement of the news was timed for Australian Government and Church release at noon on Tuesday this week. But the announcement was bungled in Canberra. Because of an eastern states Monday holiday, government officers insisted on releasing a short embargoed notice to the media last Thursday. The ABC and other services broke the embargo and released the news last Saturday. As a result, national media interviews with Catholic bishops scheduleI for Tuesday were abandoned. Although a draft plan of the pope's visit has been drawn up. the Vatican is likely to follow its normal pattern of not releasing an official itinerary until very close to the event. Archbishop Barbarito said arranOng for the pope to meet all the different specialised groups in Australia would be difficult and that the same program could not be repeated in eVery capital city. A t St John of God Hospital last Monday the President of Ireland, Dr Patrick Hillery caught up with the 91 year old Monsignor John McMahon who performed his parents' wedding in Limerick Cathedral 66 years ago.
'Double' wedding is recalled
Seconds after a priest of two days had performed his first wedding an assistant priest declared it invalid and ordered a replay. That is Monsignor John T. McMahon's telling of the ceremony in limerick Cathedral M years ago when the parents of the President of Ireland, Dr Patrick Hillery, were married by Father McMahon ordained just two days earlier in All Hallows College Dublin on June 22, 1919. He was performing the wedding ceremom because the bride Nellie McMahon was his first cousin.
