Pope's visit to Holland

JOHN PAUL EJEC"ITS R EQUESTS Bishop with catechists

AMSTERDAM: In a face-to-face meeting with Dutch Protestant leaders, Pope John Paul rejected requests for shared communion between Catholics and their churches. He also suggested a formal exchange of speeches was hardly likely to resolve the objections they had raised about Catholic attitudes to mixed marriages. To the chairman of the Dutch Reformed Church, Rev Henk Huting who had said his churches were ready for shared communion the pope said: 'Would difficulties really disappear if in spite of existing divisions in faith, Christians were admitted to full communion in the eucharist? The Protestant leader, speaking in the papal embassy which was once the home of the 15th century Dutch pope, Hadrian VI, also claimed the Catholic Church's failure to treat people in mixed marriages the same way as others is a reason for many young people turning their backs on the Church.

Bishop Healy told 94 catechists whom he commissioned last Friday that their mission was a call from the Church and from their baptism in Christ. The bishop warned the new recruits they would encounter difficult children but they should remember it was the Lord's work they were doing. The pope's observation to this assertion was: "In Catholic marriages, a partner is called to be loyal to the tradition of his or her faith, to live it and hand it on. -You know as well as Ido such delicate problems cannot be resolved in an exchange of speeches." ( Texts of Pope John Paul's have not reached Australia at the time of printing. Editor.) Pope John Paul is reported not to he discouraged by the reception he is receiving

both inside and outside the various receptions he is attending. Verbal criticism of the pope has come from as high as the Dutch Prime Minister, Mr Lubbers who said: "Rome sometimes makes Dutch people uneasy if not downright suspicious." At Utrecht, a chairman of the Gronigen Diocesan Missionary Council departed from her vetted text to complain the Church was not making room for unmarried people living together, divorcees, homosexuals, married priests and women. The pope remained expressionless but the audience clapped Mrs Hed-aig Was,ser who later said she had

departed from her prepared text which otherwise would not have received advance approval. Cardinal Simonis had already banned Professor Catherina Halkes from speaking.
