This, he said. means a struggle "against everything that offends God." The pope said that includes "injustice, exploitation, falsehood, deceit and "everything that profanes human society and human relationships" and "every crime against life." Entitled "to the youth of the world," the letter was released to coincide with a Vatican-sponsored celebration when more than 150,000 young people came to the Vatican on Palm Sunday to commemorate the U.N. International Youth Year. A special edition of the letter has been prepared for
John Paul's plea to use our strength distribution to youths worldwide, said Bishop Paul Cordes, vice president of the Pontifical Council for the laity. The book, with a bright blue plastic cover, is printed in seven languages and supplemented by a series of scripture selections around which the pope developed his letter. Bishop Cordes said the Vatican would like the blue book to have the same kind of widespread distribution
and reading the red book had. He compared the Vatican's intentions for the pope's blue book to the aim Chinese leader Mao Tse-Tung had for his "red book" of sayings. Mao's hook was wide:y read and disseminated throughout China to educate young people during China's cultural revolution of the mid-1960s. In the letter. Pope John Paul notes the common
instincts of young people who question the causes of injustice, hunger, systematic violence and abuse. Young people also rightly ask, he said, why scientific and technological progress turn against humanity in so many ways. Pope John Paul tells youth to ask whether they will succeed in changing this state of affairs. The pope also advises youths to educate themselves by building character and warned them not to be critical, skeptical or cynical. He warns young people to resist the temptations of "a type of entertainment business that distracts people from a serious commitment in life and encourages passivity, selfishness and selfisolation.Instead, he says. youths should grow through con-
tact with nature, the achievements of humanity, other persons and God. An outdoor person in his youth, the pope stresses communion with nature. He asks youths to consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life and reminded them the call to priesthood in "the latin rite is linked to the conscious and free choice Of celibacy." Those who do no pursue a religious vocation still are called to he imitators of Christ, he adds. Pope John Paul tells young people to "learn married love day-by-day" and describes such love as selfless. He warns young people to be aware that "today, the principles of christian morality concerning marriage are in many circles being presented in a distorted way." This distortion transforms a human being, especially a woman, from a subject into an object, he said. "The whole great content of love is reduced to pleasure," he said.
