Compassion means giving until it hurts; otherwise don't give, Columban missionary Father Brian Gore said in St Mary's Cathedral last Sunday. Launching the 1985 Lenten Project Compassion appeal he said: "In all honesty we cannot say, if we look Jesus in the face, that we Catholics have given until it hurts." The congregation at the 10am Mass included 110 people who will be promoting Project Compassion in their parishes. After Father Gore's homily the representatives of the 67 parishes came up to Archbishop Foley to be commissioned and receive the parish promotion kit. questioned Father Gore whether the $250,000 Project Compassion funds given by the people of Perth archdiocese in 1 984 is real compassion.

He said that there was no question that the people in overseas countries needed financial help but t hey also wanted the better-off countries to have a change of heart. He said people could be assured by the guarantee of the archbishop that money given to Project Compassion was reaching the people they really want to help.

It was not good enough to give handouts which

tomorrow were all gone. Help had to be given to people to help themselves, to liberate themselves from injustice and suffering. Father Gore said that the Fact that two-thirds of humankind are living in poverty with undernourishment and hunger was the root of instability and

revolutionary insurrection around the world. He said that one of the priorities of Christians was to ask why this was happening; to be concerned for the fact that we are responsible for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. The Lenten appeal was a multi-pronged attack on the problem: changing ourselves in line with

the gospel message of love and service but also offering our lives to our friends and neighbours and alleviating their situation according to our means, he said. He said the challenge was to maximise. not minimise our effort, to give until it hurts otherwise it was better not to give.
