WATER IN A. DRY LAND

PRICE 40 cents

Locating and fetching water is traditionally a woman's task in Third World countries. Here, women refugees in Tawawa camp in the Sudan share out the precious — and expensive — water. Funds from Project Compassion in Australia helped to ensure a regular and cheap water supply in Tawawa.

AID ACR

FUNDS BREAK RECORD A ustralian Catholics gave unprecedented support to the work of Australian Catholic Relief in 1984 — ACR's 20th anniversary year. During 1984, aid given through ACR amounted to $8.14 million, which is more than double that given in 1983.

Perth archdiocese ranked iserti in Australia with its 1984 Prelecteampassift Wei of $258,879. Other capital city diocesan totals were: Melbourne $545,953, Sydney S313,960, Brisbane $274,168 and Adelaide 8196,284.

The African Drought Appeal was the major factor in this dramatic increase. From June until the end of December, ACR received $2.85 million to support victims of the current drought that is affecting 26 countries in Africa. One significant feature of the African crisis was that it was the first time the 17 major Churches in Australia combined to launch an appeal in June (long before the dramatic television coverage of the Ethiopian situation) and which raised $5 million at the end of 1984. "This appeal demonstrates how local Church agencies are in an ideal situation to foresee problems," Mr Whiteley ACR national director said. "As early as last February Church agencies in Africa were alerting us to the potentially disastrous situation. "Church agencies immediately acted although they did not have the resources to prevent the calamity that subsequently occurred." "If governments and UN agencies had responded in the same way as the Churches the suffering may have been partially alleviated.
