SANTO DOMINGO (Dominican Republic) (NC): Pope John Paul II told Latin American Catholics that the Church must work for social justice, then spelled out rules for that work which preclude using violence and class conflicts. During on outdoor Mass at a Santo Domingo racetrack attended by an estimated 100,000 people, the pope said Catholics must never resort to violence, must not consider the poor as a "class in struggle" and must not help bind societies to programs of atheism or "practical materialism."
LAUNCHED PROGRAM
ROME (NC): Pope John Paul ll'strip to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico was to help launch a nine-year evanglisation program aimed at developing the faith among Latin Americans. T he bishops inaugurated a "novena of years" leading up to the 1992 a nniversary of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the New World and the subsequent a val of Christianity.
Standing next to a group of Latin American bishops, Pope John Paul listed the conditions he said must be followed in working toward the "social liberation of the multitudes of needy."

Those conditions include: • fidelity to the Gospel. "which prohibits recourse to methods of hate and violence." • a preferential option for the poor which is not "exclusive or excluding, but which opens itself to those who want to leave sin and convert in their hearts." • a view in which the poor are not seen "as a class in struggle, or as a church separated from the communion and obedience to the pastors designated by Christ."
NURSES PAYING TRIBUTE
In front of a congregation of nearly loop in St Mary's Cathedral last week, nursing sisters light some of the 500 candles that were a feature of the call to remembrance for patients who had died during the year in the care of the Palliative Care Service. The Uniting Church moderator, Dr Owen preached the homily during a service attended by Archbishop Foley and Anglican Assistant Bishop, Brian Kyme. Father John Ryan chaplain to Royal Perth Hospital was master of ceremonies.
• A campaign of social transformation which avoids bringing man "under systems that deprive him of his freedom and subject him to programs of atheism, or of practical materialism, which deny him his interior and transcendental richness." The pope added man's true liberation is liberation from sin and from "social evil that rests in his heart." "These are some basic points of reference the Church cannot forget in its pmmotional and evangelical action," the pope said.
