Calling the path of youth today a "Rocky Road" an interchurch 1984 Social Justice statement asks for a $850 million programme to correct anomalies in the youth employment scene. It says that a seven-point programme of indexation of benefits, training allowances and living-away-from-home assistance would cost less than the tax cuts given to income earners in the 1984 budget. Concentrating on the 270,000 youth in Australia who cannot find work, the statement says anomalies in the income security system affect not only youth but everyone. "The prospect of a two-society nation makes such reform all the more urgently needed," says the statement.
