VATICAN CITY (NC) — Pope John Paul II has spelled out to French Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy the Church's opposition to France's school reform plans which French bishops say would limit the autonomy of Catholic schools, according to the Vatican press office.

The press office broke from its usual practice and issued a public statement after the 35-minute private audience, which centred on the highly sensitive school in issue. Normally, no details about private audiences are revealed. During the encounter, Mauroy described in detail the French proposals to the pope. The provision most contested by Church leaders would tie State funding of private schools to incorporation of private school teachers into the civil service. "The Holy Father illustrated to Mr Mauroy the Catholic Church's position of principle" on the school question, the statement said. That position, it added, "is the result not only of statements made by French bishops, but also of the talk (Pope John Paul) gave in St Peter's to the Roman Curia on June 28." In his talk to Curia officials, given the day Mauroy arrived in Italy for a three-day visit, the pope strongly defended religious education as a fundamental right and said Catholic schools "must not be obstructed or reduced." While he did not name specific disputes, the pope urged bishops in Europe to stand firm against "difficult situations."
