Archbishop Foley told a group of prisoners at Fremantle gaol on Sunday his visit was intended to demonstrate he and the Church community should be concerned for those in gaol. He was speaking at the regular Sunday Mass which is normally celebrated by the chaplain Father George Ryan OMI. Also present were the music group who regularly sing at the prison Mass and a group of religious who help with the counselling of prisoners and their families. that experienced entering a hospital and seeing the forbidding looking equipment and surroundings. Depending on the value placed on the hospital, a person is prepared to overcome that apprehension, and so it is up to the Catholic community to be aware of its apprehension about prison life and to do something about it. He praised the work done by the prisoners for less fortunate people, such as toys and other equipment made for handicapped children.
At any one time there are 1500 people in WA prisons and up to one third of them Catholics but the Church community does not see this as a mission according to Oblate prison chaplain, Father George Ryan of St Patrick's Fremantle. "Some of our niembers are in prison and we neglect them. We know of people in neighbouring countries without the necessities of life but we forget that those in our prisons are equally poor," Father Ryan said this week after Archbishop Foley had accompanied him to Sunday Mass in Fremantle gaol.
