A 15-year -old blind lad f rom La Salle College, Midland is representing A ustralia in swimming at the International Games for the Disabled in New Y ork this month. Kingsley Bugarin of Guildford leaves this week with the rest of the Australian team for the games, to be held from June 16 to 30. The determination taking the boy to the top of his sport, in blind and sighted events, was manifest early in an interview this week. "He wants to be a computer -programmer," his mother had remarked. The Guildford couple did not suspect there was anything wrong with their first-born until he reached the age of five when some i mpairment of vision became apparent. Tests revealed he was suffering from a condition c alled Lebers Optic Atrophy, for which there is no known cure. In fact, medical science can tell the parents little about the disease. What is known is that he w as born with it, though it took five years to show up. His sight will not improve.

He has less than the 10 per cent vision required to be classified as legally blind, but how long what sight he has will remain is another unknown.
