EN YOUR HEARTS Catechists have to be prepared to open the hearts of adolescents resisting faith, in hearts hardened by experience, treated badly or even scandalised by those claiming to have faith, Archbishop Foley told a congregation in St Mary's Cathedral on Tuesday night.
—They may have parents who do not value God or His Church. You may be the only person they will hear speak of the things of God," the archbishop said, encouraging them to give generously their time, understanding. interest and even forgiveness. Several hundred catechists and friends from most of 68 named parishes were in the cathedral for a commissioning ceremony for new and former catechists. After the address. 43 concelebrating priests and 25 parish representatives approached Archbishop Foley to receive the certificates that will he distributed in parishes next Sunday to commission local catechists for the years 1984-86. The last such cathedral ceremony was held in 1982 when 600 catechists were commissioned.
Archbishop tells 470 catechists In the 1984 ceremony only 475 were commissioned, 70 of them being new catechists. The new catechists had attended a ten week training programme at the Religious Education Centre in Wembley spending an hour of developing faith and another hour on acquiring skills For the first time the training programme was conducted entirety hr laity with the help of one religious brother. Archbishop Foley told the catechists to have confidence in God and not try to MCASUre the success of their work' "He told the catechists they would have to ensure the understanding of their faith increased and urged them to attend future study courses and in-service days. He called on priests, parishioners and pastoral councillors to provide whatever spiritual and material assistance the catechists needed. "Provide opportunities for your catechists to meet and share their faith and experiences with one another and he with them on those occasions to encourage them," he told the priests.
