BIG INTEREST IN SHROUD OF TURIN A 40 minute interview on the shroud of Turin had brought an uprecedented number of calls to the 6KY switchboard, Father Brian Morrison said this week. A two week display of Brooks Institute photographs of the shroud has opened at the Commonwealth Bank, 150 St George's Terrace, near William St.

The exhibition includes two full scale reproductions of the shroud as it looks and the vital negative image that reveals so much detail. T he Brooks Institute photographs of 1978 subjected the image to every kind of photographic test t o try and detect the process by which the image had occurred on the shroud. The research has concluded the image on the shroud is of a real human f orm and is not the work of an artist. T he bloodstains are human haemoglobin and the image is probably the result of a natural chemical process that "developed" over time.

Women's nghts awareness finds its mark earlier and earlier . Accompanying a colouring competition entry, nine year old Phillippa Farrell of Karrinyup wrote of the contest picture: "It's amazing that there wasn't any women listening to Jesus. Perhaps they were all at home doing the chores or tending to their baby.Of course, the women were there, but they were always portrayed as an anonymous group in the background.
Women certainly played a very important part in Jesus' life, it is the writers of the Gospels who have chosen not to tell us about them. In a bid to set things right this week's Bible Story on Page 14 tells of some of the women who followed Jesus and listened to Him

The opening of the Joseph Cooke Hostel at Rossmoyne was an occasion for the Church to rejoice that the project had happened, Archbishop Foley said after he blessed the Thomas Perrott Retirement Village last Sunday. The complex was officially opened by the Minister for Social Services, Senator Grimes before a large audience which included the national executive of the Knights of the Southern Cross who sponsor Southern Cross Homes.

-We must accept the reality of aged people in our society," Archbishop Foley said. "There was a time when only a few recognised their presence and did something about it. "More recently the whole community is geared towards recognising a more active ageing of people. that the aged people still have a mission and a part to play, and something to give the younger ones in our midst. Accept reality of the aged "At Rossmoyne we have something which is a witness to that belief and to the way we deal with others," he said. Archbishop Foley thanked the Pallottine order for making available the land on whch the Thomas Perron Village has been established. Pointing out the three Southern Crass villages in WA at North Perth, Embleton and Rossmoyne now housed 120 residents, he noted Southern Cross Homes catered nationally for 2700 residents, II(X) of them in South Australia. He noted the concept of Southern Cross Homes had been developed in Western Australia before spreading to other states. "It is a wonderful Australian example of people with professional skills working in an honorary capacity giving time to the service of others, —this includes board members and the people who work in the villages to make them happy places in which to live, where people are challenged to be creative in the latter years of their life." He praised the contribution made by Mr Thomas Perron after whom the village is named, and also that the name Joseph Cooke was a tribute to a man who had been great in Australia, great on the state scene and great in the Church. He praised his work in the union movement and for his integrity and loyalty in all his actions as a Catholic. Archbishop Foley said he was heartened by the remarks of Senator Grimes on the integrated service the government seeks to give for the aged.
