Archbishop Foley has told the Diocesan Pastoral Council it is important for him to hear what members of the Church are thinking and saying, and for him to hear and share their reactions to issues. In his first meeting with the council since assuming office the archbishop said the c ouncil was an avenue for this to happen and that the council should bring ideas from the outside to him. He said the mass media were an important area of modern life to which the Church might devote greater attention and of which the Church might greater use. He told the members they should not see the granting of land rights to Aborigines as the end of the matter. Aborigines had many other needs and Catholics could do much to respond. In the first of the quarterly meetings for 1984 the diocesan body heard reports on pornography, the L J Goody Testimonial Fund, youth accommodation, and casinos.

Pat Usher honoured A n outstanding Catholic former parishioner of Bunbury, the late Pat Usher was honoured on St Patrick's Day when Bishop Quinn dedicated three cathedral windows to his memory. Bishop Quinn spoke eloquently of Pat Usher's dedication to his God and to Christian principles. The mayor of Bunbury Mr A.G. McKenzie and a former mayor Dr E. Manea also spoke most feelingly of their association with Mr Usher in his public and private life. A congregation of 250 heard a magnificent rendering of Let the People Praise by local soprano, Betty Jenkins, and saw a liturgical dance Like a Shepherd by Maurita McKay and Carmella Giacci, accompanied by Betty Jenkins, singer, Molly Clifton, organist and Luke DeBono flautist.

Archbishop Foley On pornography John Cahill reported a committee recommended a broad approach by the Church addressing the root causes rather than the symptoms. Some members however felt the Church should act in a more direct fashion. Pat Ryan said the legislation being drafted on the control of video movies was an area the DPC should research and make representation to the appropriate minister. A subcommittee will be convened by John Cahill to follow up this recommendation. A DPC committee on the L J Goody Testimonial Fund convened by Fred Gatti will administer the $46,000 fund which was collected in parishes last year as a farewell gift presented to him in a public ceremony in the Perth Concert Hall. Archbishop Goody said he wanted the money used to support the training of lay Christian workers. The committee intends to make an annual award to one or more lay people to assist with the expenses incurred in providing lay apostolate programmes. Josephinne Vitali reported on youth accommodation that a register has been compiled of homes in Perth willing to accommodate country youth. Youthcare now holds the register and so far 84 people have been found accommodation. Posters will be sent shortly to country parishes to advise them of the service. Peter Fleas on behalf of the DPC welfare committee joined a delegation of churches to the deputy premier Mr Malcolm Bryce on the casino question. The group expressed concern about potential social damage from a casino outweighing possible advantages. Mr Fleav said the group received a good hearing but warned the matter is not yet resolved.
