C ontinually care for and encourage the flock of Perth, Pope John Paul exhorted Perth's new Catholic leader, Archbishop William Foley in an apostolic letter read at his installation last night. The full ministerial handing-on of Christ's mission to the Apostles took place in St Mary's CathedralwhenArchbishop Foley solemnly took office as the Archdiocese'sfourth archbishop. John Paul's letter said: "For two years with praiseworthy efficiency you have governed the flock of Geraldton and there is ample evidence of your episcopal concern in the diligence of your work... "We exhort each of our beloved sons and daughters t o receive you with every kindness, and to accept you in all you do as their teacher and director. "May they' also with equal readiness obey you when sometimes you give them direction in matters of spiritual importance."

The packed Cathedral congregation applauded after Pope John Paul's Apostolic f etter appointing Archbishop F oley was read by his lifelong friend Father Maurice Toop, w ith whom he was ordained priest in Nedlands in 1954.
