ROME: The extension of the Christian Brothers into Third World countries in spite of a shortage of brothers is one of the congregation encouraging signs according to the Brother general superior Gabriel McHugh. Brother McHugh was commenting on developments which had taken place during the six years he has been superior general but which he described simply as progress that takes place from one administration to the next in his order. Among 20 new openings a foundation has recently been made in Peru and another in Argentina. In Uruguay an upsurge in local vocations has resulted in the appointment of a local novice master. The expansion of the order in South America has meant that much of the congregational documentation has to appear now in Spanish as well a s in the tradi tional English. In Zambia where the Brothers are in charge of seven mission schools, it has been decided to set up a separate region of the congregation. Brother McHugh said one of his hopes was the congregation might be able to expand its activity in Italy where the Brothers have taught in

He also referred to a growing understanding of their role in the Church and also to the fact that Catholic schools were seeking to respond to the needs of the times. He felt that in some parts of Europe the vocation of the religious brother is not properly understood. For all such orders the big question was to discover their
presence charismatic and not just their place in the hierarchy of the Church. The role of the religious brother was to be a witness of living the gospel in an external way and and to give expression to that in whatever work they undertook. He felt in the future there might be fewer voca
tions in all the religious orders but this was related to new understanding of ministry and of the place of laity in the local church. Typical of this was the spon taneous growth of the lay movement of Saint Egidio which was doing renewal work in the parishes of Rome.
At the general chapter in March the delegates will be studying the final draft of the revised constition of the Christian Brothers. Representing the WA -SA province will be the retiring provincial superior Brother L. Bowler and council current members Brothers G. Faulkner and J. Carrigg.

The formal institution of Archbishop Foley will take place during Mass in St Mary's Cathedral beginning at 7pm on Wednesday, December 14th. As wide a representation as possible of religious and laity will be admitted to the ceremony by invitation.

Archbishop Foley
Following the ceremony, Archbishop Foley will meet the congregation at a social in the grounds of Mercedes College. The ceremony of Archbishop Foley assuming the chair of office will take place after the liturgy of the Word and after he has made a solemn profession of faith before Archbishop Goody. The ceremony will be televised. Geraldton diocese parishes will also be invited to
send representatives. Bishops throughout Australia receive invitations on such occasions and at least other archbishops or their representatives from the Eastern States are expected to attend. Invitations have also gone out to all priests in Western Australia to attend the installation of Archbishop Foley in his capacity as metropolitan or senior prelate of the bishops of WA. On the day following the installation the priests will have a liturgical and social meeting with the new archbishop. Archbishop Foley has been inundated at Gerald-
ton and Perth with congratulatory messages and he has still to attend standing appointments such as a visit this week to K arratha, a meeting of priests later in the month and a 75th anniversary in Greenough on December 3. Meanwhile Geraldton diocese now has to await its second new bishop in just two years and to that end the priests of the diocese have already been asked to submit personally to the apostolic nuncio, Archbishop Barbarito, their opinions on a possible successor.
