The pope spoke during his Angelus blessing at St Peter's Square a few hours after two bomb attacks killed at least 161 US marines and left at least 58 French soldiers dead or missing. U S, French, Italian and British troops form an international peace k eeping force sent to Lebanon to help the central government establ ish control over the country's f euding pol itical and religious f actions. "This morning the news spread a round the world of two grave t errorist attacks perpetrated in Beirut, Lebanon, that claimed scores of victims among the American and French military who serve in the multi-I . tional peace force sent to that torrnented country," the pope said. " A feeling of great pain, horror and denunciation arises in the soul. Y oung lives were cruelly cut off w hile they were performing a mission of peace. It is a new violence that is added to the massacres that have spilled a trail of blood and mourning among the people of Beirut and villages in the region," he said. "It is a new fact of war in a moment in which, taking advantage of the fragile truce, an attempt is being made to resume a dialogue between the parties," he said. The pope asked 80,000 people in the square to pray with him for the young men who died, for the other victims and for the comfor-t of their f amilies.
S trong objections to some provisions of the Sex Discrimination Bill 1983 have been expressed by Archbishop Francis P. Carroll, Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, in a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Hawke. He said that he was "profoundly disturbed by what I am advised would be the effect of certain provisions of the Bill if it were to become law." The Bill's approach to abortion was the first cause for concern. One effect of Clause 24 would make it unlawful for a hospital conducted by the Capital Territory Health Commission to refuse to perform an abortion on a pregnant woman who requested it. Ariother effect would be to make it unlawful for a doctor or nurse employed by the Commission t o decline to perform or participate in the performance of an abortion requested by a pregnant woman. A rchbishop Carroll said the amendment proposed by the government to Section 20, even in its application to "services" was too narrow. Would it, he asked, justify a refusal by a hospital or medical p• ractitioner to perform a sterilisation operation? Would it provide a defence to a registered marriage celebrant under the Marriage Act who refused to marry a couple on the gound one or both were divorced persons?
