Marcos steps in. . . but Father Gore 111ISSeS out
President Marcos of the Philippines has granted an amnesty to 55 alleged criminals and political prisoners but Perth-born Father Brian Gore is not among them. Bishop Fortich, Father Gore's bishop says t he amnesty was obviously granted in an effort to abate the growing swell of public unrest f ollowing the killing of opposition leader Aquino. The bishop says that if the judiciary before whom Father Gore is arraigned does not decide within 10 days if the priest's long delayed trial is to proceed, they and the government will be publicly denounced by the Church. This was among the points made by the bishop in a broadcast interview this week on Radio 6KY's Community Care programme.

I asked: Has the death of Aquino in any way influenced the amnesty that has been given to 55 alleged criminals? Bishop Fortich: Very much. It is our opinion the president wants to appease the public because now three times a week there are demonstrations. They are peaceful, but already the businessmen are coming out to the streets, which has never before happened in our country. "Two weeks ago, prominent women also demonstrated. "The president made some concessions to the opposition party for the election of assembly men by region, as embodied in the constitution. "All these things are just consequences of the assassination of Aquino that has set on fire the whole nation. "It's a phenomenon that's hard to explain. "But the people have suffered so much the whole country is expecting that vilification of the assassination may be forthcoming." The bishop said the 14 months since Father Gore first faced the courts had been arduous days for the Church in the Philippines. "Our local politicians interfered," Bishop Fortich continued. "and President Marcos is just waiting for the decision of the court. "We feel this last postponement will truly be the last. "If they ask for another we will denounce them publicly and it will be a real fight ! asked how Father Gore was, and the bishop said: "Father Gore is fine.
