St Anthony's church and presbytery, Green mount, has a garden of quite some magnitude! The church, officially opened February 5, has b lossomed in many ways, not simply spiritu ally which it has judging by Mass attendance and parish participation but also in the form of 1100 native trees and shrubs which have been planted with much loving care. Parish priest Father Laurence is a keen and active garden lover. A s a result he has organised and planted with the assistance of parishioners, an immense variety of every conceivable tree and shrub, mainly centred on the church and presbytery. The 4ha grounds have a liS.ral sprinkling of trees but these have been added to with a specific plan. There is an avenue of R ottnest Island pines running east to west through the property.
Along the Innamincka R oad frontage, Wandoos have been planted to complement the existing ones, their tal l white trunks providing a contrast and a regimented line of order. Interspersed with these are coral gums (euc. torquata), burdettiana, lehmanii and others to aid v isual beauty and p rivacy. MANILA: Cardinal Sin hopes it may be possible to ask for an amnesty for Father e and the other prisoners on the occasion of President Marcos' birthday •Gor because it is a year of jubilee. He made this comment in an exclusive phone interview with Father Brian Morrison after the funeral of Benigno Aquino which the cardinal said was bigger even than that of President Magsaysay in 1957. "In the history of this country there has never been a funeral like it," he said. "But then I asked the people to maintain peace and reconciliation because we should not solve our problems by killing one another. We asked them to try and see this death would give life to our country. Looked at in a spiritual aspect it might bring life to our country because that is the only way. Scripture has always been very clear: "Unless a grain of wheat f alls into the ground and dies there can be no fruit. "His (Aquino's) death may bring life to our country because sacrifice is always precious in the eyes of
God. God will not abandon this country because the people are very good. Cardinal Sin quoted a Jesuit historian who said that The Philippines was a poor country — so poor it did not have even a language - but in spite of its poverty it had faith and music. "This country may be trampled upon but it will rise again," said the historian. GOODY BACKS CALL ON BILL
A rchbishop Goody has joined Australia's six other archbishops to back a call by Catholic moral theologians for a free parliamentary vote on the 1983 Sex crimination Bill. Referring to comments drawn up by m embers of the Catholic Moral Theology Association, A rchbishop Goody said: "Together with the other archbishops of Australia. make these comments my own.
