Pope John Paul defended the dignity of human life and called for its protection from the first moment of conception in addresses to Australian bishops and workers in one of Rome's largest hospitals.
The Australian bishops were among a large group of 20 cardinals and numerous Vatican officials present at the Mass celebrated by the pope for Cardinal Knox before his remains were flown to Melbourne for burial. The pope said Cardinal Knox's years as Archbishop of Melbourne were marked by "great dedication to the problems of the suffering and the poor."
Speaking to a group of Australian bishops which included Bishop William Foley of Gerald ton, the pope praised them for "their concerted efforts to proclaim the dignity of life and to expose the evil of abortion. Obviously aware of the advanced in-vitro fertilisation programmes occurring in Melbourne and other Australian cities, the pope called on the Australian bishops making their formal five year visit to Rome for their constant vigilance on the problems associated with genetic engineering, and on the question of care of the aged and respect for life.
