He defended Solidarity's right to e xist and the right to strike in spite of the martial law crackdown. "Man is not willing to work when he does not see the sense of his work," he said.

Fhe previous stop had been at Poznan where he told the farmers to keep alive their Rural Solidarity organisation. Pope John Paul drew on the late Cardinal Wyzinski's words to state that the right of a worker to join a union of their choice is a privilege "not given to us by the gate." "It is a question of a people's right to free association," said the pope using the strongest tone in his speeches so far. The more than one million Silesians listening to the pope were a critical audience before whom to touch on the subject which is antagonistic to the martial law government because seven Silesian miners were killed by police in the early days of the martial law. Pope John Paul is determinedly using his visit to try and bring social justice and peace to his country saying that Poland can only begin solving the deep divisions between the communist government and society when a true dialogue exists. Taking advantage of one of the four occasions on which he was being allowed nationwide live exposure by the government-controlled television. he clearly aligned himself with the Solidarity reforms as the starting point for reviving Polish political life. *Continued page 16.
