Pope John Paul stepped up his pressure on Polish martial law authoritarianism by using the word "Solidarity" before a crowd of one million in the Silesia coal region. He did this as authorities made increasingly blunt comments on the pope's presence in Poland.

"It is a question of a people's right to free association," said the pope using the strongest tone in his speeches so far.
