Canberra has given the green light for the construction of Perth's newest Catholic secondary school, Lumen Christi College, Gosnells which will involve an expenditure of nearly $2 million before its first stage opens in February next year. Last week the Commonwealth Minister for Education Susan R yan authorised the $880,900 grant from the Commonwealth government for the first stage. The announcement from Canberra also clears the way for a nnouncing the 111=111111INIMIIV AI appointment of Mr M ichael Devine, p rincipal of the Gosnells college in whose planning he has taken a keen interest over several years. Deadline closer Project Compassion funds will be despatched from Perth on June 23 in order to reach Sydney by June 30 the date on which the taxation concession on donations closes for the year. The archdiocesan director of Australian Catholic Relief Miss Margaret Collopy. this week made an urgent call for parishes to have all their monies from Project Compassion lodged at the Catholic Church office well before next Thursday's closing date. She said there were still some 20 par-
ishes which had not forwarded the proceeds from the 1983 Lenten appeal. Another reason for promptly sending the funds was the number of overseas projects desperately awaiting help fro this source. A CR has already allocated $2 million of projects in anticipation of the funds sent in from the parishes. Miss Collopy said 1983 Project Compassion would fail to reach last year's record total. But she added there had been a marked increase in donations in some 40 parishes.

On the sand pad prepared at Gosnells for the new Lumen Christi College it has been a long and anxious wait for the new principal of the school Mr Michael D evine and the chairman of the board Mr Laurie Holyoak.
A third archdiocesan college will be launched soon in the Heathridge area of the northern corridor. To get the project underway the Archdiocese of Perth has provided $400,000 for a 33 hectare site on Mills Road Gosnells where it meets the Beechboro-Gosnells Hwy near the junction with the Albany Highway. It is hoped that some of t he surplus land will be able to generate capital for the school expansion at a later date. • Continued page 6.
