ATTACK ON PR ORT Young people in clown costumes and six girls from the World Games Rhythmic Gymnastic group stole the show at the gala spectacular launch of youth appeal 83 in Forrest Place this week. The Minister for Education, Mr Pearce, representing the Government, commended the good work done by the voluntary youth sector of WA and officially launched the appeal which will conclude with a door knock on August 14. A crowd of 500 people saw a 40 minute programme of song, dance and "clowning around" performed by both young and old. Premier Mr Brian Burke and the Leader of the Opposition Mr Ray O'Connor are joint patrons of the appeal. The appeal is a first for Western Australia. Never before have so many voluntary youth organisations joined together for such a venture. The groups include: Anglican Youth, Catholic Parish Youth, Frontier Youth Services, (Scripture Union) Uniting Church Youth, Catholic Youth Services, Y oung Christian Workers, Young Women's Christian Association, North Perth Youth Groups, Youth Hostels Association, and The Perth Inner City Youth Services. "Each of these groups obtain their funding the hard way as 90 per cent of the funds come from members and generous donations from businesses or individuals," said Father John Jegorow:

appeal chairman.

Spectacular launching

Invite to pope

It is a strange world we live in when gorilla stories from the Melbourne zoo and bubble blowing conventions in the US are more important news items on our local media than the urgent needs of 50,000 young people.

Last Monday three church groups and four community-based voluntary youth organisations held a gala spectacular appeal launching at Forrest Place. The first ever combined youth appeal on such a scale. Two local television news teams filmed proceedings. Yet neither channel could afford to give the launch any space during its regular half hour news time. Stories of lesser interest, at least to me, from Melbourne about a cheeky gorilla and the idiosyncracies of Americans blowing bubbles — something I stopped doing as a child — squeezed the Youth Appeal out. We have come to accept the bank robberies, tragic deaths, overseas wars, grand prix races, riots and sporting events large or small, are the daily diet of our evening news reports — all mainly BAD NEWS.

t ragedy addicted hearts. I know young people disagree with such values but 1 wonder if young people are really able to do much about it. In the late 60s and early 70s many tried throughout the world and we witnessed a rash of bloody riots on university campuses and in the streets of major cities. In those days Vietnam was the issue. Today we hear of fewer protests by the young. And the good stories are never told. I'm sad that when young people gather to "protest" in a harmless and happy way, their joy and enthusiasm is not shared through the media. Youth Appeal 83 is now in progress. Its aim is to make the WA public aware of voluntary youth organisations and their activities. Westpac has been the first contributor to the appeal with a cheque of $5000.Ihope every businessman in Perth with or without teenagers in his home will be a contributor to this appeal. • Continued page 2
