The national committee of Australian Catholic Relief has allocated more than $ 2m to support relief and development activities in five continents even though it has not yet received the money.
The allocations decisions were described by ACR national director, Michael Whiteley, as "an act of faith" in the generosity of Australian Catholics. "At present ACR has less than a quarter of that amount. "Unless $1.5m from the recently completed Project Compassion appeal is received before the end of June, ACR will be substantially in the red," he said. Of the 57 projects considered, 36 were approved outright, eight were rejected and the remainder deferred because of insufficient Irummor Ar Air Arimmmmr AIIr ANIIIMINIMINIII information.
The dean of St Mary's, Monsignor Pat O'Reilly, said that the less than 200 people at each Mass did not warrant t heir continuance when both congregations could be comfortably accommodated at the new time. He said the move was in line with discussions at the Senate of Priests which recommended a rationalisation of Mass times to conform to the shift in c ongregation sizes and to take into consideration the declining number of priests available to staff parishes at the former levels. Saint Mary's, like many churches, has actually increased the number of Masses in recent times. When the Vatican gave permission for S unday evening Masses 20 years ago, the cathedral was the only church where a Spm Mass was celebrated until some years later the privilege was introduced to all churches and widely introduced.

Tuesday when proceeding to court in the company of 60 supporters on a truck, the military held up the group for an hour trying to separate the people from the priest. On Monday the military tactic was to produce a doctor who was supposed to describe the
wounds of the murdered governor allegedly murdered by Father Gore as so bad the priest should not be given bail. Under cross-examination the doctor-s evidence did not stand up. Father Gore said the military are trying to coerce the people to give up supporting him.

The refugees are in a "holding centre" awaiting an assessment that will decide whether they will be resettled in other countries, or whether they will remain in Thailand until it is possible to return to their homeland. In the assessment, and in their eventual resettlement, much will depend on t heir knowledge of English. ACR has supported the English language programme run by the Thai Catholic Office for Refugees for the past two years. *S20,000 to the Latin A merican Co-operative Institute in Panama to enable the institute to continue its work of training leaders of co-operatives, farmer and industrial workers groups. This may enable them to be more effective in working for community development and the promotion of social justice.
