Gaspar a c aptive? MANILA: A lay leader of the Church in the Philippines ... well known in P erth through well attended seminars he conducted here last year ... is reported missing, believed detained, in Mindinao Province. Karl Gaspar, 35, lectured in Perth last April on social justice in the Philippines, and made many friends here. A former executive secretary of Mindanao Sulu Pastoral Conference, he has not been seen or heard from since March 26. According to reports, he went to the offices of the Ecumenical Centre for D evelopment (ECD), apparently unaware that at least five people, including two visiting Germans, one of whom was a priest, had been arrested there on March 24. ft is believed Gaspar was also arrested at the LCD offices, Those arrested on March 24 are thought to be held in Camp Catitipan, Davao City. The authorities have denied any knowledge of his whereabouts. In the past year, at least 40 priests, nuns and lay workers have been arrested in the Philippines. Amnesty International is concerned that the Philippines authorities have neither acknowledged the arrest of Gaspar nor disclosed his whereabouts. There is concern for his safety and Amnesty is urging supporters to express their concern to the Philippines Ambassador in Canberra. 4 .

ROME — Former Aquinas senior master, CBC Gerald ton principal; and Fremantle teacher Brother Max McAppion has been bashed by members of a so called "convent gang" which has been terrorising priests and religious at their residences.
Brother McAppion heard noises in an adjoining room in the Christian Brothers Generalate House in Rome when another Australian, Brother Bernard Dawes was being bound and gagged, at 3 o'clock one recent morning. When Brother McAppion burst into his confrere's room, the five hoodlums turned on him and struck him above the eyebrow but he did not need hospital attention.

Armed with knives and iron bars the group had forced the entrance of the Christian Brothers' Institute on Via Maglianella. They are believed to have escaped on foot through the entrance because no o ther windows were forced. Brother McAppion, now appointed to South Australia, is in Rome on the three month tertian course. The attack on the brothers is only one of 13 similar attacks in recent months. On the same night at 5 a.m. a similar gang with knives and bike chains tricked a sacristan into opening a door of a presbytery and they attacked the priest and forced him to hand over $600. In another similar incident a 71 year old priest was found dead in his ransacked apartment. The police believe that the old man, already a sufferer from asthma, was overpowered by ether or suffocated by the intruders. Neighbours saw the men making off with some itolen property. Some sources put down the raids to youths on drugs desperate to get funds for their supplies. It is not known how many gangs are responsible for th attacks.
