School put to a good use The parish of Wembleji may have lost its own parish school but it has opened its arms to a new family, the Catholic Care for the Intellectually Handicapped. The group has been given a rent-free, two-year lease on portion of Our Lady of Victories former school vacated after the school was transferred to the Floreat campus. The move is a big step for CCIH which until now operated from a room and telephone service provided by the Knights of the Southern Cross at their Hay Street headquarters. The Wembley buildings include two former classrooms, kitchen, staffroom, toilets and tuckshop. The rooms will provide a place for meetings, library and other resources and a regional catechetic sister operated by Sister Joanne. W embley parishioners showed their support on Saturday when more than 30 CCIH supporters stripped the rooms for painting and renovation costing $6000 for which the CCIH will be grateful to receive public support at their 364 Cambridge Street address, phone 387 7478.

The Holy Year proclaimed by His Holiness Pope John Paul II begins next Friday, March 25. The Holy Year celebrates the 1950th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the year 33 AD. The Catholic Archbishop of Perth, Sir Launcelot Goody, this week announced arrangements for celebrating the Holy Year.

Gift for fire relief
Pope John Paul II has given $11,500 to assist relief for victims of bushfires in Victoria and South Australia. The Apostolic Pro Nuncio in Australia, Archbishop Barbarito. said the Holy Father was making this contribution as a sign of solidarity with those people who had suffered so greatly as a result of the fires. The National Director of Australian Catholic Relief, Michael Whiteley said he felt all Australians, and particularly those person-
ally affected by the fire, greatly appreciated the pope's interest and concern in all the people of the world, extending to those living in the richer countries.
Mr. Whitely said the money would be given to the St Vincent De Paul Society in Victoria and South Australia. He paid tribute to the amount of work done by society members for the fire victims, much of which went unrecognised by the general public.
