CTS DRAW R YOUTH Up to 1000 young Catholics are regularly involved in fundamental and pentecostal movements in the Brisbane archdiocese. Many older Catholics also are involved. This "conservative estimate" was given to the archdiocesan Senate of Priests in a special report on Catholic y outh, The report was prepared for the senate at the request of Bishop Gerry, Auxiliary, Brisbane, and Fr Vince Hobbs, archdiocesan liaison priest for the Catholic Charismatic movement.
Drawn away The senate was told: "This report expresses anxiety at the number of Catholic youth who feel drawn away from Catholicism to participate in the religious services of other Christian sects, namely, Christian Outreach Centre, Christian Life Centre, Garden City Christian Centre and Northside Christian Family."
Geraldton entries on display A comparatively rare Catholic architectural event takes place at Allendale Square next week when there will be a five day exhibition of plans prepared for a new Catholic complex in Geraldton. On display will be submissions made by four selected architects in a limited ideas competition conducted for Bishop Foley of Ceraldton to prepare for a new c athedral presbytery and parish centre. The drawings on display are not the final design but only the
concepts submitted by architects in
a competition to choose a final architect. Bishop Foley approached the Royal Institute of Architects in organising the ideas competition as he felt the new building and its relationship to the unique St Francis Xavier Cathedral would play a significant role in the development of the city of Geraldton. Initially interest was invited from the profession and 36 responded w ith a submission of their credentials.

The report says: Background: Most young Catholics believe in a God 'of some kind' and that they can communicate with him. "Jesus Christ is a big question mark to many of them -- an estimated 75 per cent of them have no personal relationship with Jesus by the time they leave school. "The Church is irrelevant to them: They see it mostly as organisational or institutional; it rarely has any part to play in their lives; their recognised needs are normally not being met by the Church."
Desperate The report goes on: "Yet they are desperately searching for something or someone who believes in them and loves them; gives meaning and purpose to their lives. "Enter a few aggressively evangelistic Churches into the scene..." Their - approach, the report says, is: "Strongly evangelistic...calls each night for people to commit their lives to Jesus...big emphasis on the proclaimed word to
