Contrary to Press reports last week, annulment procedures in Australia are not likely to be unduly affected by the new code of canon law. One report written from Rome said annulments were likely to be more difficult to obtain. The writer failed to note that only the procedures for annulment might have to he changed, and only in the United States. The grounds for annulment apply to the universal church and are set by the Church's highest courts in Rome. In recent years the United States matrimonial tribunals were allowed by Rome to use special procedures that were designed to speed up the processing of annulment applications. Several Vatican officials were apparently critical about the large increase of annulments being granted by U.S. tribunals.
