Archbishop heeds enthusiasm Opening the charismatic conference Archbishop Goody cited enthusiasm as a characteristic of charismatic prayer but he also recommended a "good dose of realistic pessimism". "May we all , during these three days, deepen our love of God, our faith in Jesus Christ whom He has sent, and our openess to the Holy Spirit: "May we deepen our knowledge and appreciation of God's revelation of Himself in Jesus Christ through the Holy Scriptures and their interpretation by the authority of Christ's Church; "May we draw closer to God by sincere prayer to Him for enlightenment for courage and for a meekness and humility in accepting what may be our duty and acknowledging our own frailty: may we accept in love and obedience our superiors, reverence our equals and be concerned for those who depend on us. "May we be so enlightened by God's grace that we may recognise false prophets and erroneous teaching and be strengthened to overcome their wiles and deceits. "Charismatic prayer, which many of you practise and enjoy is enthusiastic: "Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice" (St Paul). "It is faith and hope expressed with feeling and sentiment — and often with
the hope or even expectation of th "fringe benefits" of the so called "gifts of the Spirit". "It is good to be aware of and admire the enthusiasm of the infant Church of 2000 years ago. It is not possible, nor perhaps desirable, for us to revert to our earliest youth. "So notwithstanding the enthusiasm. we must recognise that things are not "all right with the world" even though "God is in his heaven". "Optimistic forgetfullness of the conditions around us in cheerful Christian bonhomie can be a very useful spiritual tonic to ward off the depression which might otherwise oppress us. But taken alone it could be an opiate to lull us into a euphoric disregard of the action that is needed. Action both mental and operational that is required of us to oppose and conteract the "spirit of the world" and the powers of darkness which surround us. "A Charismatic prayer group or community must not become a walledabout, ghetto-like retreat for egocentric refuge from the world about us. "And so, a good dose of realistic pessimism should be the antidote to too much enthusiastic optimism."
