SHOOTING OF POPE USSR INVOLVED W ASHINGTON (NC) — The attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in May, 1981, was probably hatched by or with the knowledge of the Soviet Union and its eastern bloc communist satellite, Bulgaria, witnesses told a congressional panel on September 23.
One witness said, the Soviets may have been behind the assassination attempt not just because they were angry about a letter the pope reportedly sent them threatening to return to Poland if the Soviets invaded it, but a lso because they feared John Paul would lead a reunification of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches — thereby threatening their power over people in the Soviet Union and its satellites.
Except for this theory postulated by Atanas Slavov, a Bulgarian writer in exile, the hearing covered much of the same ground reported recently in the news media, linking Mehmet Ali Agca, the convicted papal assailant, with a criminal network supervised by the Bulgarian secret police, who in turn were controlled by the Soviet Union's KGB secret police. The hearing was held by house and senate members of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, which monitors implementation of the Helsinki Accords. One member, Senator Alfonse D'Amato, said he persorrilly knows an unidentified monsignor who carried the pope's letter to Soviet president Leonid Brezhniev in which the pope reportedly wanred he would return to stand beside his Polish countrymen if the Soviets invaded Poland. D'Amato said his monsignor friend "was quite convinced the Russians were behind the assassination attempt."
