Freedom plea at Polish feast Pope vows to visit homeland
V ATICAN CITY: As hundreds of thousands of Poles gathered at Jasna Gora in Poland, Pope John Paul broadcast a message in which he promised to visit his homeland during the year of celebration that has just begun.
A t 8am in his chapel at Castelgandolfo last Thursday Pope John Paul celebrated Mass which was broadcast direct to his people in Poland. He pointed to the area above the main altar in the chapel where hangs a reproduction of the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, placed there by Pope Pius XI, who had served as Apostolic Nuncio to Poland in the years following the re-establishment of the nation's independence in 1918. "That pope loved an independent Poland,- Pope John Paul told the small congregation in the chapel. The pope told the congregation that he felt "a profound bond" with ceremonies taking place in Jasna Gora and an "obligation" to participate in the jubilee. He said that he wished to express once more his "conviction that the statements pronounced in relation to this pilgrimage of the pope to his homeland will be realised within the framework of this jubilee".
"The good name of Poland before the nations of Europe and of the world demands this also," the pontiff added.
In his homily the pontiff urged moderation, calling on Poles to "rebuild the common good" through dialogue. "One cannot build this (common) good through means of force and violence," said the pope, "but through the eloquence of reasons, which signifies r espect for every man and which therefore is capable of convincing everyone". "Power can be truly strong only with the support of society," the pontiff concluded, "and the way which leads to such support passes not through opposition but through dialogue with all, through a real social accord". The pope referred to the Polish Franciscan priest, blessed Maximilian Kolbe, who will be canonised on October 10. The pontiff said that Father Kolbe's action in identifying completely with another human being by taking a man's place in the death line at A uschwitz symbolised the human solidarity needed to solve Poland's problems today.
