THE LAND OFFERED The former St Francis Xavier Mission territory at Wandering which is still under the control of the archdiocese of Perth comprises the following: • A number of small farm holdings totalling some 535 hectares (1200 acres) which were purchased freeholdin 1946 at m arket value. • A 208 ha (500 acre) site that was granted specifically for the Aboriginal mission and on which substantial buildings were constructed. • An adjacent 3700 ha (9140 acre) property leased in 1964 for 99 years for the benefit of Aboriginal people and which in 1978 passed into the control of the Aboriginal Lands Trust with the lease currently having 78 years to run. In recent y ears some farming development has taken place on this property.

property. In the course of his homily Archbishop Goody said: "I suppose one should put one's money or action where one's mouth is. We have all heard about land rights for Aboriginal people and on this most people of goodwill will say 'Yes'. But what are they exactly? "At June, 1981, some 20.8 million hectares (51.5 million acres) — not all of it by any means good land were held by the Aboriginal Lands Trust either as r eserves, leases or freehold. He said that by comparison the Catholic Church owned very little land most of it in five and ten acre properties for the parishes and schools throughout the state. He then outlined the land held by the Catholic archdiocese at the former St Francis Xavier mission at W andering, comprising 703 ha (1700 acres) of freehold and 3700 hectares (9140 acres) held on lease from the Aboriginal Lands Trust.
