waN,

Children who resist the call to faith in adolescence because experience has caused them to harden their hearts must receive special concern and attention Archbishop Goody told a big congregation of catechists in St Mary's Cathedral. "Perhaps they have parents who do not value God or his Church; perhaps they will not have had real experiences of love; perhaps they have been treated badly, or even been scandalised by someone who claims to be a person of faith. Archbishop Goody was delivering an address to hundreds of catechists who have completed a course for accreditation in government schools. Next Sunday they will be presented with their certificates during Mass in their parish churches. "Try to open the hearts of these children, so that they will be able to hear the call to Faith, and give them the experience of someone who — like God — loves and takes an interest in them," Archbishop Goody continued. "Always bear in mind that you may be the only person the children in your class hear speak of the things of God. Give to these children generously of your time, your understanding, your interest, and even of your willing forgiveness. "I realise, my dear friends, that the ideals I am speaking of are difficult to put into practice, especially in schools that often fail to a ppreciate your presence. I realise that you will experience discouragement and even, perhaps, despair about the value of your efforts.

"This is why, like St Paul, 'I give thanks to God every time I think of you...for the way that you have all continually helped to promote the Gospel'.Iam certain that 'he who has begun this good work in you will carry it through to completion' (cf Phil 1, 3-6). "Be careful to remember the promise of Jesus, 'I will be with you always' (Mtt 28,20). He will be with you when you are preparing your lessons, and when you face a discouraging principal. He will be with you when your classes go badly, and especially when you feel totally alone. "Do not try to measure your success. Instead, remember that if you are called to plant or to water the seed that is God's Word in the hearts of your students, it is God himself who will provide the increase (1 Cor 3,6). When you feel despondent about your students' reactions to your lessons, think on Jesus words: 'If anyone declares himself for me in the presence of men, I will declare myself for him in the presence of My Father in Heaven' (Mtt 10,32). "In your classes, you will meet children, also, who you will not be able to Catechise, for they will not have made that initial act of faith which we call 'conversion'. "These children must be of special concern to you as you try to Evangelise them —which means leading them to the act of conversion by your example, by class prayer, and by your explanations.
