The fact that Bishop Myles McKeon would most appreciate in retirement was his presence as a bishop at the Second Vatican Council, the dean of Bunbury, Father Leon Russell, said last Friday night. "The significance of this privilege can be seen in the fact that in 2000 years of Catholic history there have been only 21 ecumenical general c ouncils, the previous being a little over 100 years ago," Father Russell continued.

He was speaking in the South West Italian Club where 700 people gathered for Mass and a supper presentation in the first of three deanery farewell functions to Bishop McKeon whose retirement has been accepted by Pope John Paul. Bunbury parish council president Mr Kevin Rynge headed the organisation of a function that included 16 priests and representatives from the parishes of Bunbury, Dardanup, Brunswick, Harvey, Waroona, Mandurah and Pinjarra. During the Mass music was provided by organist Peter Leunig and singing was conducted by Anna Buswell. At the presentation Dr Don McKenna spoke on behalf of the laity. "The impetus and direction that the council gave the Church has been picked up by our bishop and put into practice in a most effective way. Its results can be seen in so many ways," Father Russell continued. "Priests, sisters and brothers along with the people of God are renewing themselves in the spirit of the council; lay people are exercising a more vital and integral part in Church life; the liturgy of the parishes has been I updated. the nder th sI)i o f Vaticanu the spirit many bishop, has waC:ts its council lathers, n yone Mayor of Bunbury, Pat ns"plinr astowin the with pictured is McKeon Bishop A fter his farewell Mass in St Patricks Cathedral, Bunbury, truly been experienced.
