WA NUMBERS INCREASE AT SA SEMINARY

SOME DRIVERS HAVE STRANGE V ERSIONS OF HOW TO PARK

An unknown driver did not stop to say what was his version of "parking" at St Mary's Cathedral Murray Street entrance early one•morning last week. Cathedral clergy say that the demolition of the fence that took place some time between 4am and 7am was the third collision at the corner during the night. They have tried to inure themselves to the screeching tyres and minor collisions with trees that are a feature of cars speeding around Victoria Square every night, The parking sign was put up four years ago when more and more Royal Perth Hospital staff and visitors began taking over the cathedral grounds as their parking preserve, damaging sprinkler systems and shrubbery in the process. One doctor left his car in the grounds for two days.

When warning notices were ignored the cathedral administrator found that the only solution was to lock the cathedral grounds except for the hours when Mass is being celebrated. Notwithstanding the clear sign, visitors still sneak in and park in the grounds when the gates are open and have to put cathedral ground staff to much trouble to re-open the gates when they have returned from shopping or hospital jaunts. The iron fence is over 50 years old having been put up after the construe, tion of the eastern end of the cathedral and following some city council pressure to replace the wooden paling fence that previously had surrounded the site.

attending St Francis Xavier Seminary this year.

Fifteen students come from WA and 14 from South Australia. The remainder of the 34 students come from the diocese of Wilcannia, Wagga and Bathurst in NSW and one from Queensland. Two of this year's enrolment, up nine from last year, will join the congregation of Vincentians who administer and lecture at_ the _seminary. The new rector is Father Romuald Barry, who has succeeded the one-time WA seminary rector, Father Gerald Scott, who is now provincial superior of the Vincentians. A new feature of seminary training at Adelaide is to have each student spend two periods of his six-year course in pastoral training at the parish level. A special programme has been drawn up by Father Jim O'Loughlin, acting director of pastoral studies, to outline the programme of activity that a student will follow during his placement in a parish situation.
