Something to show and say'

"We believe that we have something to show and something to al/," said Mr Guido Vogels, of Centrecare, last Sunday explaining that although the new Youthcare residence on Salvado Road w as the fourth such venture it was the first official opening. He said it was also a matter of public accountability following the grant in 1981 which enabled the employment of Miss Sheryl Carmody at Centrecare, the employment of a houseleader for the new residence and also for s ome house alterations. "For the two years before that it was a fully self-supporting operation in terms of time and effort on the part of volunteers, as well as their

The Benedictine monks will continue to minister to the people of the area as a parish of the archdiocese. They say Mass at the centres of New Norcia, Calingiri Gillingarra and Yerecoin. The amalgamation of the territories' was announced this week in a joint statement by Archbishop Goody and the prior administrator of New Norcia, Dom Justin Bruce. The dissolution of the separate territorial administration follows on a Vatican recommendation several years ago that the few abbeys nullius remaining in the world should become attached to the neighbouring diocese. "Abbey Nullius Diocesis" is a technical term meaning that a monastery is given charge of a surrounding territory that is "part of no diocese" and over which the local abbot assumes all ecclesiastical authority. New Norcia was granted an exemption from the recent Vatican instruction. A the time the abbey nullius of New Norcia also had jurisdiction over the territory at Kalumburu which last year was incorporated into the territory of the diocese of Broome. The merger of the Kalumburu and New Norcia territories into neighbouring dioceses only concerns Church jurisdiction and does not affect the ownership of properties or leases held by the Benedictine community in both areas.

It is on authority in the Church that most attention will be focused as the report becomes public and is read by members of both Churches. It addresses four key issues that were left unresolved by the previous authority report. These are: • The interpretation of the "Petrine Texts" or scriptural passages about St Peter's particular role in the Church. • The meaning of the "divine right" ascribed by Catholics to the primacy of the Bishop of Rome in the universal Church. • The Catholic affirmation of papal infallibility, and • The nature of the jurisdiction, or legal authority, ascribed to the Bishop of Rome as universal primate. In each of the tour areas, the ARCIC calls on the world's more than 700 million Catholics and 63 million Anglicans to overcome polemical language of the past and see if they can agree on• language which adequately expresses the faith of both, without requiring either Catholics or Anglicans to compromise on what they consider essential.
