Arriving in the Nigerian capital of Lagos he declared that he had come to "strengthen the faith" of the rapidly growing Catholic community, which represents about one-fifth of Nigeria's Christians and seven percent of its total population of 80 million. He repeatedly stressed the Christian values of love, generosity and duty and the traditional African values of the extended family as counterforces to the temptations to materialism, corruption, neglect of the poor and the aged, breakdowns in family life, and the "anti-life mentality" of abortion and contraception.

But he warned some 100,000 young people in Onitsha not to succumb to the lures of "selfindulgence and escapism" or other temptations. of material wealth. "Be generous," he said. "The one who gives sparingly will reap sparingly. The one who gives with generosity will reap an abundant harvest." At his first Mass in Nigeria, Pope John Paul emphasised the Church's task of evangelisation, or bringing the message of the gospel to all. But he also highlighted the link between Christianity and authentic human development of all of society.
