Bishop accuses in Polish situation 4

WARSAW: In a hard-hitting sermon last week Archbishop Glemp, primate of Poland, blamed the martial law for the bloodshed which has taken place under military rule.
"
Archbishop Glemp compared the plight of his Polish nation to the agony of Christ in His crucifixion. Polish television covered the ceremony in St Augustine's church, but gave no report of the sermon in which the Archbishop deplored the way the Church's plea for no bloodshed under the state of emergency had fallen on deaf ears. Archbishop Glemp told a packed congregation that the fact that miners had been killed and that other deaths were a result of the proclamation of martial law filled him with sorrow. He • * stressed that a Catholic should not meet violence with violence, nor seek vengeance.

He also criticised loyalty oaths being demanded by the regime of some civil servant! and industrial workers. The oaths, he said, posed an issue of con science for the faithful.
Archbishop Glemp said members of the Solidarity trade union movement were being asked to renounce their membership and many people were threatened with unemployment. Statements made under pressure, he went on are without validity — an implicit encouragement to Catholics to sign the oaths regardless o. their conscientious objections. The archbishop castigated the Government for demanding that workers renounce theit union membership and expressed concern °vet the fate of 5000 people arrested under martial law.

POPE HITS OUT ON POLAND V ATICAN CITY: Pope John Paul II has condemned the Polish government's demands for loyalty pledges from citizens, calling the practice a violation of c onscience "worse than murder" in some of the strongest language ever from a Pope.
"Under the threat of losing their jobs, citizens are being forced to sign declarations that do not agree with their conscience and with their convictions," the Pope said during his Sunday blessing. "Violation of conscience is a grave act against man. It is the most painful blow inflicted on His comments were the strongest condemna- human dignity," he said. tion of military rule in his homeland since Gen"It is, in a certain sense, worse than inflicting eral Jaruzelski imposed martial law on December physical death, murder," he told the about 30,000 1 3. people assembled in St Peter's Square.
