APPEAL FOR PEACE IN POLISH CRISIS

VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope John Paul II made a strong appeal for peace in Poland after hearing news that his native country had been placed under martial law because of the growing crisis between the communist government and Solidarity, the independent labour union. "Polish blood cannot be spilled because too much has already been spilled, especially during the last war," said the pope last Sunday in a brief speech to 200 Polish pilgrims at the Vatican to hear the pope's noontime Angelus. "Events in the last few hours require me to turn my attention once again to the cause of our homeland and to call for prayers," Pope John Paul said, putting Poland into the care of Our Lady of Czestochowa, patronness of Poland. Vatican sources said that because of a cut in communications with Poland the pontiff was unable to get in touch with Polish Church leaders.
