A rchbishop Goody explained the success of the 500 acolytes in Perth archdiocese and in other parts of Australia and the Holy Father was keen to know what other work they did in h ospitals and the visitation of the sick at home. "Pope John Paul was most interested in what was happening and said how much lay people had to contribute to the Church," Archbishop Goody said. "Before Ileft him the pope also stressed how much the Church depends on the zeal of priests and the different ministries of religious brothers and sisters. Archbishop Goody said the pope's well-being and health were obvious although he was thinner and his neck a little more drawn than when they met three years ago just after the pope had assumed office.
Injured finger healed "I looked at his hands to see the finger that was severely injured in the shooting but there is no sign of damage whatever and it seems very good plastic surgery has been performed," he said. Although the private audience schedule was running ten minutes late and he expected only ten instead of 20 minutes, Archbishop Goody said the pope was in no hurry, there was no sense of rush or nervousness. Archbishop Goody had also had a brief earlier meeting with the pope during the last of the open-air audiences in St Peter's Square before they go indoors for the winter months. "He invited the handful of bishops present to give their blessing along with him," he said. "He then boosted my ego, as before Icould introduce myself he grasped me warmly and said, `Ah, the archbishop of Perth'."

"Whether this was a good public relations exercise or just spontaneous, it is typical of his warm greeting," Archbishop Goody said. (Archbishop Goody was host to the then Cardinal Wotyla when he stayed at Victoria Square for two days following the Melbourne Eucharistic Congress in 1973).
