The Knights of the Southern Cross at their State conference gave a warm ovation to the Bishop-elect of Geraldton, Dean William Foley, who has been chaplain to the order for the past five years.
Replying to an introduction by State chairman Max Bowen, Dean Foley said that his years as chaplain had given him an opportunity to be much better informed about the order and he said that he was pleased to know that there was a strong branch of the KSC in Geraldton where he would be shortly taking up residence. Dean Foley accompanied Archbishop Goody at the dinner and the Mass which later opened the State c onference. In his address Archbishop Goody said that bodies such as the KSC were expected to do something for the benefit of the public and in the matter of morals and the maintaining of standards, leadership should come from people such as the Knights of the Southern Cross. He urged the knights to be moderate and to be open in their ideas and to perceive the need for change. He also urged them to be compassionate and supportive of other people. State chairman Max Bowen in his address emphasised the need for members to be ever-ready to help the less fortunate — to be Christ-like in their actions and to be truly apostolic in their approach to their every-day activities within the community. Noting that the theme for the order in WA this year was Vocations, Mr Bowen continued: "We must encourage a greater awareness of the need for religious vocations. We also must take note of our own vocations in life and continually strive to understand more fully our individual roles both in our families and in our community. (See also Page 3)
